Academic Camps

At Windward, our summer academic camps are designed to enhance campers' confidence, curiosity, and integrity. Campers can choose to explore a wide range of academic disciplines such as robotics, forensics, and debate.

Windward students also have the opportunity to explore service opportunities and earn credit through Windward's new Service and Leadership Camp.

  • Summer Algebra 1 Course

    Taught by Windward Math Teacher Kelly Payne, the summer Algebra 1 course in West Los Angeles meets the requirements of the Windward Algebra 1 course taught during the school year and enables students to take Geometry the following academic year. This course is for any students who have successfully completed a PreAlgebra course that would be followed by Algebra 1 and have the ability to move at an accelerated pace.

  • Beginning & Intermediate Lego Robotics Camp



    Led by Becky Carter, Windward’s Middle School Robotics teacher, students will learn how to construct and program an autonomous robot using the EV3 base set and LEGO Mindstorms image-based software. Building strategies, basic programming skills, and teamwork are emphasized. We'll also take a break from the lab with sports, games, and other activities. This camp is for beginners only. If your camper already has experience with LEGO Mindstorms software (meaning they’ve already taken a session of LEGO Robotics camp at Windward, have participated in a LEGO Robotics program at school, or have been on a FLL team), we would love to see them at the Advanced camp. This camp is for rising 4th Graders through rising 6th Graders.

  • Camp Tyrone

    Start your Summer spending five days with the King of Fun at Windward. Windward Athletic Director Tyrone Powell will lead Windward students entering Grades 7-9 at Windward in celebrating the fun of Summer. Students will engage in excursions, including Knott’s Berry Farm, Dave and Buster’s, bowling, and a trip to the California Science Center, as well as participating in games and activities at Windward. Please Note: This camp is offered only to incoming Windward students and current Windward students in Grades 7-9.

  • CREATE Camp

    In CREATE Camp, participants will explore hands on, interest-driven challenges inspired by real-world design and STEAM practices. Igniting passion for science, technology, engineering, art, and math, these challenges will allow participants to create a variety of items using modern technologies like 3D printing, laser cutting, and vinyl cutting. Other activities developed out of Northwestern University include laser defenders, ringtones, dream homes, party lights, and LED lights.

  • Debate Camp

    Under the direction of Windward's Debate Coach Dawn Robinson, Windward Debate Camp will help campers develop their skills in a fun environment. Students will learn how to research, organize arguments, think critically, and speak eloquently. Students will participate in debates on a wide range of issues and will develop their talents and their confidence in public speaking.

  • Intermediate & Advanced Lego Robotics

    Led by Becky Carter, Windward’s Middle School Robotics teacher, this advanced camp will focus less on the basics and more on complex projects. Campers will tackle more challenging builds and programming than the beginner’s camp offered. The EV3 platform will be used to investigate advanced programming topics such as coordinating multiple sensors and using My Blocks and variables. The advanced camp is for campers who already have experience with EV3 robotics (meaning they’ve already taken a session of LEGO Robotics camp at Windward, have participated in a LEGO Robotics program at school, or have been on an FLL team). Students are welcome to take the June camp and the August camp in the same year if they are entering Grades 5 or 6 in the Fall. This camp is for rising 5th Graders through rising 7th Graders.

  • STEAM Camp

    This is your chance to spend a week doing all of the projects and experiments that make learning through STEAM as fun as it is rewarding. Experience the world through electronics, biology, art, and coding via hands-on challenges that are limited only to one’s imagination. Kevin Kloeker, Windward Middle School Science and Technology teacher, is ready to lead the campers through crime mysteries, arcade builds, art installations, and possibly a rocket launch (or two). At STEAM Camp, you don’t just learn science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics; you create it.

  • VEX Robotics Camp

    Led by Windward Robotics Coach Simon Huss, PhD, students will learn to design, build, program, and compete with fully functional aluminum robots using the VEX robotics platform. All participants will learn the basic skills necessary to fully realize a workable robot, including programming with the RobotC programming language, building and constructing complex structures using the VEX part system, and rendering their designs with Autodesk Inventor, a 3D modeling software package. The camp will conclude with teams of students engaging in competitions with robots they have designed and built.
