The Middle School Scholars program provides a dynamic opportunity for participating students to go beyond the expectations of the curriculum and engage in a deeper, interdisciplinary study of an area of interest. Working as part of the scholars cohort and under the guidance of a mentor, this program offers selected students the opportunity to pursue their passions through hands-on and problem-based learning.

The available fields include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math), Leadership & Civic Engagement, and Humanities & Arts. Once each student selects a field in which to focus, she/he will identify a more specific topic within that field to investigate further.

Program Benefits

Windward’s Middle School Scholars program challenges students to engage in extensive research, reflection, writing, and fieldwork in an area of their choosing. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the topic and its related issues, and will also develop 21st century skills applicable to all disciplines. Upon successfully completing all components of the program, students will earn the Middle School Scholars Certificate and be recognized at a special ceremony in the spring of their 8th grade year.

Program Requirements

Throughout the 8th grade year, students will explore their topics through in-depth research and fieldwork/service. First, they will research their chosen topic through traditional research methods and contact with experts in the field and create an annotated bibliography based on what they learn. Then they will develop and implement an action plan that addresses a particular problem or aspect of their topic. As a culmination of the program, students will submit a portfolio documenting their work and will present their work to the broader Windward community.

Middle School Scholars meet once a week during eighth period and will be required to complete significant work outside of class, including research, meeting with experts in the chosen field, and completing an action project. Interested students should keep in mind this extra time commitment when they sign up for the class.
