During this Fall semester elective course, 7th grade students learn how to construct and program an autonomous robot using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 hardware and software. Building strategies, basic programming skills, and teamwork are stressed. Connections are drawn between robotics and basic math and science principles as part of the learning process. A major goal of the course is participation in at least two FLL (FIRST Lego League) Robotics competitions; students will attend both a practice tournament and a qualifying tournament during the course of the semester.
This Spring semester elective course gives 8th graders the opportunity to build on what they learned in LEGO robotics as a 7th grader, or to start a new experience in robotics. This is a PLTW (Project Lead the Way) course, using those course materials. Basic line-by-line programming is introduced in this course using RobotC (a version of the C programming language). Engineering Design principles are also introduced as the students design and program their own mechanisms and robots.
