Windward Hosts VR+EdTech Talk

On February 26, Windward was host to a Virtual Reality EdTech presentation. The School invited 25 educators and industry professionals to campus to exchange ideas and best practices regarding virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality in education, both from the developer and educator standpoint. As Jim Bologna, Windward Director of Technology, explained: “Many schools are interested in exploring the applications of extended reality to the classroom, but are usually hampered by the lack of availability of extended reality instructional software. Windward tested a virtual reality experience in 7th Grade US History last year and found the experience to be very engaging, but difficult to extend to other learning scenarios.”

Jim then went on to discuss where the School has found success, namely through Windward’s VR Club and student leader Rylan Daniels ’20, who was on hand at the event. “The VR club has prototyped and developed several VR experiences, and provided an avenue for students to explore storytelling and storyboarding, coding, graphic design, and 3D modeling. The club's recent effort, an AR escape room called Starcode, was on display at the Bodies in Motion event in early February.”

Even more encouraging, Rylan’s ongoing ventures did not go unnoticed. Said Jim: “Windward is co-hosting a VR+Ed event in June, and Rylan's efforts in VR came to the attention of the event's co-founder. Rylan was asked to give a presentation on his VR journey to open the event!”
