On Friday, Nov. 16, Windward was delighted to host poet Taylor Mali on campus for a special performance. Taylor spoke and performed in front of a large audience in the Lewis Jackson Memorial Sports Center, punctuating lively readings with musings on his work. Between fits of laughter and applause, students asked Taylor questions regarding his writing process, inspiration, and the idea of finding one’s voice.
Following the spirited display, Taylor continued his work with students, joining teacher and fellow poet Brendan Constantine in Brendan’s creative writing class. There, Taylor discussed the nuance and challenges of metaphors, using his recently developed, and Windward tested, interactive “Metaphor Dice.” Using the dice, students worked with Taylor to create a group poem, an excerpt of which can be found below.
After class, Taylor signed copies of his books and sent our students off for the holidays, energized and inspired. Thank you Taylor for spending time with our students! And thank you to Brendan and English Department Chair Emily Miner for facilitating the visit.
