Windward Dance Company artist Ani Rosen ’19 has been named as a National Finalist for the 2018 National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Artistic Merit, Leadership, and Academic Achievement Award. The application process included the creation of a three-minute solo performance, recommendations, a resume, and extensive essay writing. The award was allotted based on the following criteria:
Artistic Merit: The candidate demonstrates technical and artistic excellence in dance, as evidenced by performing original choreography and submitting an essay describing the intent, inspiration, and challenges of their choreography.
Leadership: The candidate demonstrates outstanding leadership in and outside the field of dance at the school, community, state, and/or national level, as evidenced by a strong resume, recommendation letter, and impact of dance essay.
Academic Achievement: The candidate demonstrates academic excellence with a high cumulative grade point average and superior writing skills found in both submitted essays.
Ani has been invited to attend the national conference in San Diego in October, and will have the opportunity to perform her solo for dance educators and peers from the high school and college level from across the nation.
“My recognition is based upon three overarching components including Artistic Merit, Leadership, and Academic Achievement. I was particularly humbled to get acknowledged for the Artistic Merit component because I had never choreographed a solo for myself. It was challenging to craft my movement without being able to watch and critique objectively,” said Ani.
“Being able to not only tackle this challenge, but to have it result in this unexpected accolade, is particularly meaningful to me as it acknowledges the hours of hard work I put into my passion for dance.”
The NDEO also recognized NHSDA Chapter Sponsor and Windward Dance Program Lead, Alesia Young, for outstanding teaching, leadership, and guidance shown to Windward students.
“I was thrilled when I received the news of Ani’s selection. It is a highly competitive award, and we are extremely proud of Ani's achievement and the recognition of Windward School,” said Alesia.
“Anyone who has had the privilege of working with or seeing Ani in performance knows that she is a young woman of extraordinary talent and character. Her stellar artistry and the affection and respect she has gained from those who have come to know her are matched by her academic achievements. Ani is one of those students that, as a soon to be graduate of Windward School, I will follow excitedly to see what amazing things she will create in the world.”
