Windward Hosts Documentary Film Panel

On Nov. 14, Windward hosted the director and subjects from Netflix’s 2017 documentary series, “Daughters of Destiny: The Journey of Shanti Bhavan.” Founded in 1997, the Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project is a boarding school in Bangalore, India that provides a free education, including food and housing, for the children of Dalits, members of the lowest group in India’s caste system.

Chronicling the highs and lows of five young women attending Shanti Bhavan, “Daughters of Destinyexplores the challenges, and expectations, the girls face in their attempt to rise above India’s caste system.

After watching a trailer for the series, Windward students heard personal stories from three of the film’s subjects—Shilpa, Preetha, and Manjula — as well as the film’s director, Academy Award winner Vanessa Roth.

Shilpa, Preetha, Manjula, and Vanessa then took part in a Q&A, answering questions from Windward students on topics ranging from their challenging childhoods to the scrutiny and disdain endured by the Dalits.
