Windward Conservatory of Music
The Windward Conservatory of Music Ensemble (WCME) is the first conservatory-level music program to be located in and serve Los Angeles’ West Side. Housed at the renowned Windward School in Mar Vista, the WCME provides a unique, unparalleled opportunity for West Side intermediate and advanced music students who are passionate about taking their music skills to the next level.
Working with the WCME’s Music Mentors — a roster of world-class musicians and educators — at Windward’s state-of-the-art rehearsal facilities, students will advance their playing in a professional environment through a combination of lessons, group rehearsals, and master classes, all designed to nurture their individual musical talent and growth. Forming a longer-term relationship with a WCME Music Mentor enables students to learn a wide range of musical skills and techniques and also provides them the kind of advice and direction that can catalyze their musical development. Under the guidance of these outstanding music educators, who are also renowned professional musicians, students can explore a multitude of musical styles, including rock, jazz, funk, Latin, and popular music. No matter which style they choose, students will receive a firm grounding in music theory, sight-reading, and ear training, with an emphasis on improvisation technique. Performance skills will be honed in an ensemble setting, a group context that emphasizes growth, skill-building, camaraderie, and fun!
The WCME rehearsals and performances are integral to the program and are an indispensable part of a young musician’s education. The WCME’s performance component is well known for appearances at such exciting venues as The Broad Stage and the Conga Room. Each year, the WCME caps its program with a showcase performance and a competition performance at a local jazz festival. The skills and experience students gain as a member of the WCME will prepare them for auditions and competitions in high school, university, and beyond.
