On Wednesday, March 16, Windward Service Learning teamed up with Middle School students and parents for our first in-person service event in almost two years!
30 Middle School students and families came together to assemble Spring baskets for refugee families housed by the Minority Humanitarian Foundation, which was created to provide a humanitarian response to the issues facing asylum-seekers and refugees on a global scale. Their services include rapid response border pickup, family reunification, on-the-ground relief efforts at family and LGBT shelters, ongoing case management, and client advocacy.
Volunteers stuffed the baskets full of snacks, sweet treats, and toys. Amazingly, this group stuffed over 1500 plastic eggs full of candy! These baskets will be distributed to families in need at the foundation’s annual holiday celebration in April.
Robin Pickett, Director of Middle School Service learning, said, “It was amazing to come together after all of this time and reconnect with parents and students, while at the same time building baskets to help support a wonderful organization and their families. The energy and enthusiasm were fantastic!”
Thank you as always to our amazing Middle School volunteers! We can’t wait until our next event!
