Windward proudly celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, honoring the rich cultural diversity and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. In collaboration with faculty and staff advisors, the Latino Student Affinity Group launched a dedicated website designed as a resource for students and families to explore history, art, literature, and more, highlighting the profound impact of Hispanic heritage.
The month-long celebration also featured a lively community event on the Bridge, complete with live music, a game of Loteria, and a showcase of student artwork. Additionally, parents Joselito Santo and Ronaldo Ignacio, who are also capoeiristas in Los Angeles, spoke at an all-school assembly. They introduced students to Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, music, and self-defense. Originating among enslaved Africans in Brazil in the 16th century as a form of cultural expression and resistance, Capoeira offers a unique blend of agility, rhythm, and creativity. Joselito and Ronaldo demonstrated techniques and invited enthusiastic student volunteers to participate, enriching the school’s celebration of Hispanic heritage.
