Windward Communications

Assistant Head of School and Director of Middle School Eric Mandel was recently published in the Winter issue of Independent School magazine, by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).

In his article “The End We Start From,” Eric explores the concept of belonging and the critical role schools play in supporting students as they enter new communities. Grounded in research and Windward’s own practices, the article outlines how a thoughtful, multi-phase onboarding process—beginning months before the first day of school and continuing throughout the year—helps students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn.

Eric highlights the importance of intentional relationship-building, peer mentorship, and shared experiences in easing the transition to middle school and fostering a strong sense of community. The piece reflects Windward’s ongoing commitment to student well-being and was shared with educators nationwide through NAIS’s Winter publication. Read the article here
