On Thursday, Sept. 30, over 30 7th and 8th Grade families came together via Zoom for our first Middle School Service Learning event of the 2021-2022 school year! Windward once again partnered with the GO Campaign, who introduced participants to the Minority Humanitarian Foundation.
Volunteers heard from founders Jules and Mark, who formed the foundation as a response to the issues facing asylum-seekers and refugees on a global scale. They talked about the grueling journeys that families take to make it to even to the U.S. Border, and how that is only the beginning. They told personal stories of families they have helped by way of on-the-ground relief efforts, and of ways that volunteers can help going forward.
Windward families then wrote letters of positivity to child refugees in journals and crafted beaded bracelets that will be given to the children in the refugee centers. They also participated in a Q&A session with Mark and Jules, as well as other members of the GO Campaign. Our parents and students asked very insightful questions on how they can become more involved with both organizations, and it was a wonderful way to kick off our first event of the year!
Windward Service Learning is currently accepting items to be donated to the Minority Humanitarian Foundation—please contact Robin Pickett at rpickett@windwardschool.org or Ashley Goodman at agoodman@windwardschool.org with any questions.
