On October 26, students in French 5 were treated to a special workshop with Toua Hapipi, master tattoo artist from the island of Nuku Hiva in the archipelago of the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia.
Held via Zoom, Toua spoke to students about Patutiki, or traditional Maquesan tattooing. In this lesson students learned about the roles Patutiki played in Marquesan society historically, as well as the importance it holds in the recuperation and maintenance of the archipelago’s language and culture. Students also learned to draw a symbol of Tiki, the common ancestor of all Marquesans and the god most commonly represented in Patutiki.
Thank you to Toua for prviding our students with such a unique educational experience!
