Learning & Belonging

Learning & Belonging Statement

Windward’s commitment to learning and belonging is rooted in our mission: to foster a learning environment that prepares students to become responsible, caring, well-informed, ethical, and well-balanced young adults. We believe that learning and belonging are not separate pursuits; each depends on and strengthens the other. When students feel they belong, they can engage more deeply in learning. When students are challenged to learn in a supportive environment, their sense of belonging grows.

We believe that belonging is about being known, respected, and supported as your full self. It is not a program or a place, but a living practice shaped by relationships, shared expectations, and opportunities across school life.

Belonging thrives when students feel socially connected, intellectually safe, and academically supported—able to stretch, struggle, and grow without being judged or left behind.

Belonging is closely tied to student agency. When students lead, co-create, and influence the culture of our community, they are not just included, they are empowered. In this way, belonging is not something given to students, but something we help build together.

We recognize that moments of not belonging are a natural part of growing up. At some point, every student may feel uncertain or disconnected. Part of adolescence is learning to navigate these moments with resilience and support.

We also acknowledge that there are those in our community for whom these moments are not occasional but persistent and often rooted in feeling excluded or misunderstood because of core aspects of who they are. Belonging must never be framed as a test of personal toughness or adaptability; it is a shared responsibility to ensure that all community members feel seen and valued.

The belonging of students and adults is intertwined. When faculty and staff feel valued, supported, and connected, they are better positioned to create those conditions for the young people they serve.

As a community, we are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion, and we believe that our differences make us stronger.

This work requires intention and care. We pursue belonging not through shaming or blaming, but through empathy, curiosity, and kindness.

As we grow together, we will continue to listen, learn, and act so that belonging at Windward is not just a value we name but a daily practice of the mission that guides us.
