In 2001, Alesia Young was completing her MFA in Dance at UCLA when she began a part-time position teaching Dance 1 at Windward. Over the years, her diverse experience has afforded her increased opportunities and responsibilities, ranging from Windward’s first Diversity Coordinator to Period 8 Coordinator to Performing Arts Initiative Co-Chair and now Area Head of Dance.

The journey has been an enriching one for Alesia, a former Presidential Arts Scholar. “The opportunity for professional growth and development and the ability to create and implement a vision for high-level dance education inside of the independent school setting have kept me engaged and enthusiastic over the years,” she says.

Her own growth is mirrored by that of Windward’s Dance program. “With a team of professional artist-educators, a roster of accomplished guest artists, and a growing body of talented young dancers, the program has developed beyond expectation to support students at every level in exploring their creativity through movement,” she says. “Having been a part of the program’s transition and growth leaves me with a great sense of pride and excitement for what's next.”

She’s also continually inspired by her students. “Helping students discover something new or reach a goal they didn’t believe they could achieve is incredibly satisfying,” she says. “It’s an honor to help them find their voice.”
