Mandarin Classes Join for Mid-Autumn Festival

On September 16th, Candice’s Mandarin 3 class joined Wenchi’s 1A class for the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节, Zhōngqiū Jié) celebration. The Mid-Autumn festival is celebrated in many countries throughout Asia every year on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. We were lucky to be able to celebrate this piece of Chinese history in class as well with upcoming Chinese language students.

1968-1971

Teachers Shirley Windward and Carl Parsons, sharing a mutual joy of teaching and a desire to “open up” their classes, decide to open their own school on the West Side.

1971

Windward School opens at 3118 Wilshire Boulevard with an enrollment of 68 students.

1972

The first Windward Graduation takes place at the home of Robert Feldman ’73 and Rich Feldman ’77. Six students graduated.

Continuing to grow and needing additional space for new programs, Windward moves to its present site, a 9.5 acre, multi-building campus at 11350 Palms Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Tom Head of School Announcement

1987

Tom Gilder named Head of School.

Timeline 1994 Campus

1994-1997

Science labs are extended, locker rooms are built, the Annual Fund increases from a $200,000 to a $350,000 level, and enrollment reaches 350 students.

Bridge

2000

The Leichtman-Levine Bridge opens.

2007

The Board of Trustees sets a campaign goal of $18 million and approves construction of the Science, Dance, and Music Center, as well as the Center for Teaching and Learning.

2009 Timeline Campus

2009

The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Science, Dance, and Music Center open, adding 40,000 square feet of new program space.

Windward celebrates its 40th Anniversary and Tom Gilder’s 25 years as Head of School.
